What I didn't expect was that the most important work of my career would start with seeing, up close, how hard downsizing can be.
When someone has spent decades in a home, the logistics are the easy part to describe and the hardest part to carry. There are decades of belongings to sort through, hard decisions about what to keep, sell, or let go, and a new space to plan. A family is trying to support their loved one while managing everything else. Meanwhile the person at the center of it is often quietly grieving while everyone around them makes lists. It quickly becomes a second full-time job for the adult children, and the senior can end up feeling like a bystander in their own life.
That stayed with me, and it's the gap I wanted to help close.
